Developed by Steve Pearce — Chemist and Founder of Omega Ingredients — the scent was originally created to help astronauts train before launching into space.

Decades ago, NASA contracted specialists to develop the “smell of space” to help train astronauts before launch into orbit. NASA’s goal of simulating Space during training is to eliminate any surprises Astronauts might experience in Outer Space.

Eau de Space is currently running a Kickstarter Crowdfunding Campaign to bring that outer space smell down to earth. NASA’s secret space scent has been confined to astronaut-only field training, but with the help of Kickstarter, the Eau de Space team is now setting out to manufacture the scent for the curious masses, including K–12 educational programs to inspire more interest in STEM (science, technology, engineer, mathematics) through experiential learning.

How does the Space smell?

The Eau de Space team boasts fashion, tech, design and logistics experience, has partnered with award-winning perfumers to create this fragrance. The company is ready to manufacture the smell, and they are currently looking for the minimum order quantity. After which, they can bottle and ship the perfume directly to anyone, including schools.

What do the Astronauts say?

The most astronauts have quoted that the space smells like “hot metal,” and “welding fumes.” Matt Richmond, Eau de Space product manager, quotes that the astronauts describe the smell as “a mix of gunpowder, seared steak, raspberries, and rum.” Peggy Whitson, the former Nasa Astronaut and the first female commander of the International Space Station had quoted that the Space has a “bitter kind of smell in addition to being smoky and burned,” “kind of like a smell from a gun, right after you fire the shot.”

Eau de Space Packaging

Eau de Space comes in a very modern and minimal packaging with the logo in Black over a light gray illustration of a space suit on a white background. There is also a small N° 1, a la Chanel N° 5, in the top left corner of the package and on the bottle’s label.

We are looking certainly forward to this smoky scent that spaces us out !
